Excerpt: Nothing To Lose

She was awakened the next morning by the sounds of a hammer pounding near the front of her house. Fumbling for the clock, she squinted to read it. Six-forty a.m. Still half asleep and disoriented from being in a strange bed, Bailey wandered out to the living room and opened the front door.

A dark haired man in a T-shirt and jeans was working on the railing by the front porch stairs.

"Excuse me?" she called out to him, and he stopped to look up at her. Bailey went on, "Do you have any idea what time it is?"

He flashed a sly grin. "Is that what you came out here to ask me? Most people have a clock next to their bed to tell them the time."

Bailey put her hands on her hips and looked at him. "A fucking comedian. I know the time, it's six-forty in the fucking a.m. I just wondered if you knew the time. People are trying to sleep around here."

He straightened and Bailey's gaze went up with him. Maybe it was his boots, because she was barefoot, but he seemed tall. His legs appeared long in form-fitting, tight jeans. For just a moment she let her gaze wander up muscular thighs, settling on his crotch. Images of what the jeans hid flashed through her mind, and she shook her head. Trying to get back to the perturbed feeling of a moment ago, she stomped a foot.

He leaned against the rail, taking a moment to look her over. "Your mother was always up at this hour. She knew I had to get to work by eight and didn't mind me coming over early. In fact, sometimes she made me breakfast."

Bailey snorted. "Hang on to those memories, buddy."

Smiling at her lazily, his dark, clear eyes crinkled at the corners. "Oh, I'm making a whole new bunch of memories, right now as we speak." He made a point of looking at her breasts.

Bailey glanced down quickly. In her sleepy state, she'd neglected to put on a robe, and her nipples poked out through her silky pyjama top.

She gave him a dirty look and spun around to go back inside.

"Don't rush off," he teased.

"Could you finish this another time?" She stuck her head out from behind the door.

"I could." He nodded. "But I'm not going to. I'm almost done, I'll finish it now. You go on back to...whatever...you were doing."

Excerpt: Worth The Risk

Sarah and Mandy cleaned house, went shopping for Mandy's trip and got Chinese carryout for dinner. Parking in her driveway, she noticed Sam's Jeep gone but still looked up to the loft as she walked past. Where was he on a Saturday night? Trying to put him out of her mind, she watched a movie with Mandy but kept glancing out the window when she thought she saw headlights.

"Looking for something?" Mandy finally asked.

"No, of course not." Sarah settled back into the sofa so she couldn't see outside and put Sam out of her mind, for the most part.

When the movie ended, Mandy hugged her and went off to bed. Sarah tidied up the front room and then the kitchen and decided to take the trash out to the container in the backyard. She tied the garbage bag and carried it out, where she noticed Sam's Jeep. That surprised her. She had never heard him pull in.

She glanced up to the loft, but there were still no lights. Had he arrived home and gone straight to bed at barely ten p.m.? She lifted the lid to one trash can, shoved in the bag and jumped when she felt hands around her waist.

"What are you doing out here in the dark?" Sam whispered to her from behind.

"Geez, Sam! Don't do that!" Sarah slammed the lid on the trash can and turned to face him. "You scared the. . ." she trailed off.

"What?" He grinned. "I scared the shit out of you? I scared the crap out of you? What, Sarah?"

She felt her face redden, but that seemed to happen a lot around Sam. "Okay, you scared the crap out of me."

His hands on her waist, he pulled at her body until she touched him. "You shouldn't be out here in the dark all alone."

"I wanted to take out the trash." She looked into his eyes.

"You wanted to see if I made it home," he countered.

Sarah smiled. "You think highly of yourself."

Laughing, Sam said, "No, just fishing for information. But I guess you told me what I wanted to know."

"Okay, so I watched for you. I wondered where you were."

He tightened his grasp on her waist. "Good to know. Now I'm wondering where your daughter is?"

"Mandy's in her room." Her breathing grew laboured.

"Does her window have a view of the backyard?"

"No, the side yard. . . the other side."

"Excellent." He leaned in and planted a soft kiss on Sarah's mouth.

"Sam--" She pressed one hand against his chest. "I can't."

"Sure you can," he replied, his kisses trailing down her face to her neck. "Just for a minute, anyway."

"Just for a minute?" Sarah considered that, but the feel of his mouth on her body quickly chased all thoughts away. "Hmmm, okay, maybe just for a minute."

She let her hands roam through Sam's hair as his assault on her neck continued. Her head was spinning from the various sensations he tormented her with--tongue slowly licking, mouth torturously sucking and teeth nibbling and biting ever so gently.

"Oh, Sam!" she whimpered, sure if he continued she'd never want him to stop. "Please...."

"Please what?" He nipped at her collarbone. One hand snaked under her sweater and massaged her breast vigorously. "Please strip my clothes off and make love to me right here and now?"

Sarah groaned. "Don't say things like that!"

He grinned and brought his mouth to her ear. "I cleaned it up. I was going to say, 'Please fuck me hard and fast until I can't see straight'."

"Sam!" Sarah attempted to protest, but in truth his language only added fuel to the fire. No one had ever spoken to her in that manner, and Sarah shocked herself by discovering it sent shivers down her spine. She felt a definite dampness between her legs, and if it weren't for Mandy in the house she knew she'd be begging Sam to take her now.

"I'm getting mixed signals from you, Sarah," he teased, his fingers still tweaking her nipple.

She looked him in the eye. "Bastard," she muttered before pressing her mouth on his and kissing him firmly.

Sarah had never felt so wanton, and so good, all at the same time. Sam started to chuckle, but she wouldn't let him up for air. Her tongue forced its way into his mouth and explored every inch it could reach. She was relentless, and soon had Sam moaning.

She pressed her body against his and felt his erection bulge through his jeans. "I'm not the only one sending signals."

He shook his head, wiping his brow. "Nothing mixed about my signals. I want you, Sarah. I want you bad."

"I want you too," she told him truthfully. "But nothing is going to happen with Mandy in the house. I won't do that to her."

"Understood." He looked into her eyes. "Mandy leaves in a few days."

"She won't be gone that long and then she'll be back."

"I know. But it might be long enough to scratch an itch."

"I don't know." Sarah took a step back. "I've never had casual sex before."

"You almost did once." He smiled at her. "But the more time I spend with you, the less casual it feels."

"For me too." She was afraid to admit it, but felt like she should. She wasn't sure she wanted a casual relationship, and he needed to know that.

Sam scooped her hand in his and kissed the back of it. "Let's take this one step at a time. I'll meet you by the trash cans again tomorrow night, and maybe you'll let me cop another feel. By Wednesday we'll be so horny we might have to stay home from work and fuck after Mandy leaves."

She hated that his filthy talk aroused her, but it did. Pulling away from him, Sarah headed towards her kitchen door. "One step at a time, you said. Tomorrow night, ten p.m., trash cans."

"Give a guy a break, will ya, and leave the bra inside?" Sam smiled slyly at her.

Sarah laughed as she went into the house.

Excerpt: Having It All

The outside temperature was brisk and frosty, hovering around twenty degrees. Not fit weather for man nor beast, Mandy Stevens thought wryly, nor for a woman who's locked her keys in her car.

She stomped her feet a few times out of frustration and walked around the little hatchback, trying to decide what to do. Mandy carried a cell phone, but whom could she call? Her mom kept an extra set of keys but lived two hours away. Sarah Buchanan would freak out if Mandy phoned her. She couldn't call her.  I'm twenty-one years old, I need to figure this one out myself.

Her roommate back at the dorm would be no help. Dee Anderson had been Mandy's best friend since elementary school and they'd been college roommates for the last two and a half years. Neither was particularly mechanically-minded. Dee had three brothers who took care of her. Mandy had been an only child for years until her baby brother arrived, but her step-father was pretty handy, and what he couldn't fix, her uncle could.

She needed a locksmith, Mandy finally deduced. So, how to get the phone number for one? She could go back into the post office where she'd just mailed a University of Illinois sweatshirt home for her step-dad's birthday. They certainly had a phone book she could use. That's what she would do.

Mandy blew on her hands to warm them and took a step towards the building. A sporty black convertible zipped into the parking space next to hers, causing her to jump. The two guys in the front seat watched as the one in back climbed out over the top of his door.

"Right back!" he called, trotting into the post office.

"Hurry up!" the passenger yelled after him.

The driver looked Mandy up and down and gave a small grin. "Hello."

"Hey." She averted her eyes, surprised at the tingle his voice sent through her. He was gorgeous, but her irritation rankled at his reckless driving, and she refused to smile back.

"Pretty cold to be standing around out here." He gazed at her, eyes moving slowly up and down her body.

No, leered. Leering was a much better word for his carnivorous gaze. Mandy shrugged, maintaining a cool exterior while his stare steamed her up on the inside. "Pretty cold to be driving around in an open convertible."

"It's exhilarating!" He grinned wider, warming his hands in front of his automobile heating vent.

"Exhilarating?" Mandy snorted. "Try locking your keys in your car. That'll get your blood pumping."

He shut off his engine and turned to his passenger. "She's locked her keys in her car!"

"We don't have time for this," the second man grumbled.

"We can't leave her stranded," the driver insisted. He opened his door and exited his car the usual way. His fluid movements seemed more athletic than the guy who'd jumped out.

Mandy's stomach tingled, and she forced herself to look away. He stepped in front of her, and she couldn't help noticing how good he smelled. Calvin Klein's Obsession. The scent was too enticing, and she gazed back at him.

He was better looking up close, with short brown hair and a three-day beard growth. But his fancy car and expensive leather coat spoke volumes about the man--he didn't travel in the same circles Mandy did. She spotted a fraternity sticker on the window of his car. Shoot, their circles weren't even in the same hemisphere.

Mandy stomped her feet, ostensibly to ward off the cold. Mentally she kicked herself for the reactions he stirred inside her. I'm such a fool.

He moved closer, and she inhaled again. Oh well. It can't hurt to look. Her stomach tingled at his nearness.

"Let's see what we've got here." He looked in her car window. "Oh, no worries. I just need a coat hanger."

The passenger in his car spoke up. "Coat hangers don't work anymore. It's the way they design locks on cars now."

Mandy glanced at him. He was stocky and muscular looking with shaggy blond hair. Not nearly as attractive as Calvin Klein.

'Calvin' looked at his friend and smiled. "It'll work on this car. It was designed a few years ago. Quite a few years ago."

Mandy felt her face blush in embarrassment. "I can handle this, really. I was just going inside to call a locksmith."

"A locksmith?" 'Calvin' hooted. "Do you have any idea how much that'll cost?"

"I have money," she said icily, still embarrassed by the situation.

"She was going to call a locksmith!" He repeated amusedly to his friend in the car.

"Let her," the other man replied in irritation. "We can get out of here."

The first man came out of the post office, shoved his hands into his pockets and looked at them. "What's going on?"

"We need a coat hanger," the driver told him.

"I don't have a frigging coat hanger." He started to hop in the backseat.

Mandy watched him. He had shaggy dark hair but was thin and wiry, a beanpole compared to the man she'd nicknamed 'Calvin'.

The driver looked around the block and nodded his head. "Dino, right down there is a dry cleaner's shop. They'll have a hanger. Go get one."

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Dino made a move to climb in the car and then apparently realised his friend was not joking. "A coat hanger," he said dully.

"A wire coat hanger." The driver nodded and watched Dino head to the dry cleaner's.

"You don't have to do this," Mandy insisted, slipping her hands in her pockets. Dino did not look happy as he stomped off. She was embarrassed to be a burden. Freezing all of a sudden, she just wanted to go back into the post office.

"I told you, no worries." The man smiled at her. "Once he gets back, it'll only take me a sec."

"Well, all right."

He'd really left her no choice. They stood there awkwardly, staring at each other for a moment. She wanted to say something interesting, but he pretty much left her speechless. Almost breathless. She could only stare and hope her face wasn't beet red.

The man in the car spoke up. "Nick, we're supposed to be someplace right now."

"Keep your shorts on," Nick snapped back at him and then smiled at Mandy. "I guess I should make introductions. I'm Nick Westchester. The impatient one in the car is Karl Browning. And the gopher is Dino Manetti."

She studied him for a minute, debating if she wanted to give her name or not. For a brief second she contemplated making something up, an exotic name like Vivian Wallingford. She finally decided to go with the truth. "Mandy Stevens."

"Hello, Mandy," Nick said with a nod of his head and a bow at the waist. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"Yeah, you too." She tried not to smile at his goofy behaviour, but he made it tough. He was very smooth, a feature that usually intimidated her. For some reason this guy didn't--he was so charming, he made her squirm with unusual, slightly uncomfortable tingles.

Karl, in the car, obviously wasn't amused. He scowled at her and kept an irritated look planted firmly on his face.

"Here you go." Dino returned, tossing a hanger to Nick. "You owe me a buck."

"A buck!" Nick exclaimed. "For this?" He shook the flimsy hanger in the air.

"I'll pay for it." Mandy dug through her purse.

"Absolutely not." Nick touched her arm. "He owes me a lot more than a buck. Don't worry about it." He stood there with the hanger in his hand.

She looked at him and then motioned to her car. "Do you think you could....?"

NOTHING TO LOSE is a wickedly, wonderful novella that both tickles and tantalizes. I love the Bailey Montgomery character. This story may be the best way to combat a cold winter day. If it does not heat you up, nothing will. The characters are sexy and sassy. Their bickering is only so much foreplay to the main event, and it will not leave you wanting. Ms. Hill puts so much spunk and passion in her work, it made me an instant fan.
